Summer has arrived in full force, and one of the must-do experiences in Okinawa is island-hopping. If you’ve just arrived, you’ve probably already heard people rave about their trips to the Kerama Islands and may be eager to hop on a ferry and see them for yourself. The process can seem a little daunting so here’s a quick rundown for you!
Ferries depart from Tomari Port. Parking is available on-site, but during the busy summer months spots can fill quickly, so plan to arrive with plenty of time to spare. The port parking lot accepts both cards and cash, and payment is made when you exit with your car.
You can purchase same-day ferry tickets at the ticket office at Tomari Port, or buy them ahead of time online. Choose your island and follow the link through the Tomari Port website.
Checking availability for your travel dates in advance is a good idea, especially during peak season. Ferry departure times vary depending on the season, so review the schedule carefully and double-check that you’ve selected the correct departure and arrival ports before completing your purchase.
Online purchases accept foreign credit cards, and the ticket office accepts both card and cash. If you plan to pay with cash, bring plenty of yen. Once you arrive on the islands, many businesses accept credit cards, but smaller vendors, especially those offering rentals or delicious local snacks, may be cash-only.
Plan to board the ferry at least 10 minutes before departure. At the dock you’ll see a container where passengers can store larger bags, making the trip more comfortable. After arrival, that same container will be unloaded near the debarkation ramp. Don’t forget to grab your belongings before heading off to explore.
The ferries are equipped with restrooms and vending machines stocked with drinks, but food is not available onboard. If you need last-minute supplies, there’s a convenient stop nearby at Lawson Tomari Port where you can grab snacks, drinks or sunscreen before boarding. Keep applying sunscreen throughout the day—you don’t want to be the tomato-faced tourist on the ferry ride back. Also keep your camera handy, because before long you’ll be surrounded by paradise in every direction.
